Madhya Pradesh Civil Judge eligibility

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Educational Qualification:

    • A candidate must hold a degree in law from a recognized university or institution.

    • Must be enrolled as an advocate under the Advocates Act, 1961.
       

  2. Experience:

    • Candidates must have at least two years of continuous practice as an advocate immediately preceding the date of application​​.
       

Age Limit:

  1. Minimum Age:  21 years.

  2. Maximum Age: 35 years.

Age Relaxation for MP Judicial Service Examination

The age relaxation applicable for the MP Judicial Service Examination is as follows:

  1. SC/ST/OBC Candidates: 3 years

  2. Persons with Disabilities (PwD): 5 years.

  3. State Government Employees:  3 years.

Scheme of Examination for Madhya Pradesh Judiciary

Examination consist of three phases: -

  1. Preliminary

  2. Mains

  3. Interview

Preliminary Examination:

This is a screening test to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination.
 

  • Total Marks: 150

  • Duration: 2 hours

  • Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
     

  • Subjects Covered:

    • General Knowledge

    • Law

    • English

    • Computer Knowledge

    • Current Affairs
       

  • Minimum Marks Required: Candidates must secure a minimum of 60% marks to qualify for the Main Examination. For SC/ST candidates, the minimum required marks are 55%.
     

Main Examination:
 

  • Total Marks: 400

  • Duration: 3 hours for each paper

  • Type: Descriptive
     

  • Papers:

    1. First Paper: Civil Law (100 marks)

    2. Second Paper: Criminal Law (100 marks)

    3. Third Paper: English (100 marks)

    4. Fourth Paper: Hindi (100 marks)
       

  • Minimum Marks: Candidates must obtain a minimum of 45% marks in each paper and an aggregate of 50% marks to qualify for the Interview stage. For SC/ST candidates, the minimum required aggregate marks are 45%.
     

Interview/Viva Voce:

Examination Structure

The Madhya Pradesh Judicial Service Exam is a three-tier process comprising the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Interview. Each stage demands a focused and strategic preparation approach to ensure success.

 

Preliminary Examination Strategy

  1. Syllabus Coverage: The Preliminary Examination is a qualifying test consisting of 150 marks with no negative marking. It includes multiple-choice questions from law subjects, general knowledge, English, and computer awareness.

  2. General Knowledge:

    • Current Affairs: Maintain a daily diary to jot down important headlines and events. Refer to newspapers like The Hindu and Dainik Bhaskar. Utilize free online resources.

    • General Awareness: Focus on Indian history, particularly ancient and modern history, geography, and significant national parks, dams, and institutions. Books like Lucent’s General Knowledge can be highly beneficial.

    • Madhya Pradesh Specific GK: Study from comprehensive resources like Arihant’s book on Madhya Pradesh to cover the state's history, geography, rivers, national parks, and current affairs specific to the state.

  3. Computer Awareness: Refer to a concise book like Arihant’s Computer Awareness, which includes practice sets and covers previous exam questions. Analyze previous years’ papers to understand the types of questions asked.

  4. English: Focus on basic grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary. Books like Wren & Martin can be helpful for brushing up on these areas.

Main Examination Strategy

  1. In-Depth Study: The Main Examination consists of four papers, each of 100 marks. These papers cover substantive law, procedural law, and language translation.

  2. Substantive and Procedural Law:

    • Comprehensive Reading: Utilise standard textbooks such as Ratanlal & Dhirajlal for IPC, Kelkar for CrPC, Mulla for CPC, and Avtar Singh for Contract Law. Ensure to cover every section and important case laws.

    • Note Preparation: Prepare detailed notes and synopses for quick revisions. Highlight key points, recent amendments, and landmark judgments.

  3. Answer Writing Practice:

    • Systematic Approach: Develop a structured format for answer writing. Start with a brief introduction, followed by the main content with relevant headings, and conclude with a summary. Practice writing answers to previous years’ questions.

    • Regular Practice: Dedicate at least two to three hours daily for writing practice. Solve previous years’ papers from different states to get a variety of questions and formats.

  4. Language Translation and Essay Writing:

    • Analysing Previous Papers: Study judgments from previous exams to understand what is expected and refine your judgement-writing skills accordingly.

  1. Current Affairs: Stay updated with current legal developments, landmark judgments, and significant amendments. Read newspapers and legal journals regularly.

  2. Mock Interviews: Participate in mock interviews to build confidence and improve communication skills. Practise answering personality-based, opinion-based, and practical legal questions.

  3. Practical Knowledge: Be prepared for situational questions and practical applications of the law. Review your legal knowledge and understand how to apply it in real-world scenarios.
